A Conversation with Poli Sci Graduates...

So, at graduation we had these cards that we had to fill out. The cards had all of our basic information on the front, and we had to spell our names phonetically on the back. This is a real conversation that took place while filling out said cards....

GIRL 1: Wait, this card asks for "nationality." Do I say... white?
ALL IN UNISON: That's your ethnicity.
BOY 1: Your nationality is "American."
G 1: Oh, then I think they mean to ask for ethnicity.
G 2: But they didn't ask for your ethnicity. They asked for your nationality.
G 1: Well, I'm just going to put "white."
B 1: I'm not. I'm going to put American... because American is my nationality. If they wanted my ethnicity, they should have asked for my ethnicity. I'm not going to answer the question wrong just because they're stupid.
G 1: Ok, whatever... next question.... what do they mean by "school?"

So....

I'm going to law school! I decided Sunday while in the shower (where I do a lot of my best thinking). I got a little scholarship to a school in a better location than the other. Like a five year old, my mom is going to find me an apartment while she's there this summer and I'm going to move in August. I feel really good about this decision and I'm actually pretty excited!

Now if I could just find a summer job...

This is Love...

At first I thought David Cook was kind of a douche. As time went on, he was starting to grow on me... until last week when it blossomed into love. I can hardly wait to see what he does tonight!

Quote of the Week

A controversial statement about probable food poisoning from the Minestrone Soup at Olive Garden and the conversation following lead to this gem of a quote...
"Well, I'd never make out with you! I know exactly what type of guy you are... a guy who doesn't respect my standards!"
...thanks Holly!

Home Sweet Home

I feel as if I have been neglecting my blogging responsibilities lately. Finals are here and I have been spending every waking hour in the library. I don't even know why I'm paying rent this month. I guess the 3rd best college library in the nation is not a bad place to spend my time (although it fluctuates, sometimes it's even #1!). I'm really going to miss this place. We've had a special relationship over the last few years. Fear not, HBLL, I will never forget the good memories and I will cherish our last few days together. XOXO.

Setting the Record Straight

I don't know how to go about this. I usually try to shy away from this type of discussion if not asked directly, but the media are making that impossible... so I might as well set the record straight.

I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have been most of my life. I love my church and the message of God that it shares with the world. We are Christian, if you define Christian as believers and followers of Christ. We believe in the Bible (as long as it is translated correctly) and we also believe in the Book of Mormon, which is a companion to the Bible. The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ; a witness of Christ in the Americas.

At one point in time, Mormons practiced polygamy. The practice was abolished over 100 years ago... get over it. The polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ is in no way, shape or form associated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The news media are referring to the fundamentalist church as a "Mormon Sect," which is not true. There are not sects or factions of the LDS church. You are either Mormon or you're not, it's that easy! Think of it this way... if I were to decide one day to start a church and call it the "Fundamentalist Catholic Church," I have no more association with the Catholic church than the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has with the actual, true Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In our very Articles of Faith, it states, "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, magistrates in obeying, honoring and sustaining the law." We do not practice polygamy, dress funny or live on huge compounds. My father has one wife and we live a house a lot like yours. Look around, I bet you have more Mormon neighbors than you think!

I do have a testimony of a loving Heavenly Father and His true Church upon the earth (a testimony that I'm eager to share when asked). For more information about the Mormons, click here!

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock

I would consider voting for this guy if and only if....
1. Gordon Smith wasn't the nicest man in the world
2. I was from Oregon

Silly Novick, Captain Hook loses in the end!

I am So Sorry… that there are Consequences for my Actions!

It absolutely blows my mind when people are shocked that bad consequences can result from their actions. Remember when Kelly Ann from Real World Sydney was surprised to find out that she might be pregnant? When Khloe Kardashian could not believe that she had to spend the night in jail for her DUI?

One of my friends a few weeks ago decided that vandalism would be the best retaliation for his car getting towed. For the sake of this story, we’ll call him “Chase.” So the other day my roommates and I got home to find a note taped to our door offering a $100 reward for information regarding said vandalism. We joked around telling him that we were going to turn him in. Turns out that someone actually did turn him in! Then he texted each person in my apartment and asked if we ratted him out. Pscha… they were only offering $100! Not even worth it. So he now has to pay a $500 fine. Instead of being mad at himself for his stupid action, he’s mad at the person who told! I got another text that said, “I’m posting a $50 reward for any information leading to the nark who turned me in.” Really?

"New Kids on the Block Had a Bunch of Hits..."

I still have my original NKOTB tapes although I've upgraded to the hits CD. I still have my pin, pillowcase, and Joey doll. As a 4 year old, I was obsessed with NKOTB! I knew every song and sang on demand. Earlier this year when I heard that they were getting back together, I couldn't believe it! I heard today that they're going to be on the Today Show in May. This brought back one of my earliest childhood memories. When I was 4, we moved into a neighborhood with a lot of girls around my age. We all loved NKOTB. One of my neighbors decided to have a slumber party for all of us girls and get the Pay-Per-View concert! We were so excited! We had pizza for dinner and ate tons of candy and ice cream. We all had our NKOTB pajamas, pillows and sleeping bags and were ready to go... and then we all fell asleep before the concert even started! Luckily, my neighbor planned for this and taped it. We watched it the next morning. I was so little, but I remember how fun that party was! NKOTB brings back memories of a simpler time.

A Lil' Low-Brow Humor...

I really could not believe it when I saw this commercial! You'll feel bad for laughing the first time you watch it.... but then you'll tell all your friends about it later!

UPDATE: Ok, so YouTube took it down. Bummer... basically Lil' Bush says, "Barak Obama says he wants change... that's the last thing we need... some black guy in the White House begging for change!" Be on the lookout for it and I'll look for a new link!

I Keep Up with the Kardashians.

Not since House of Carters have I been so ashamed to love a reality tv show. Congratulations, E! You've done it again! I find myself crunched for time at this point of the semester, yet I simply cannot miss my weekly dose of my favorite "dead behind the eyes" sisters (thanks, Joel McHale)! Even though the older girls seem sociopathic, I had not given up hope on the younger two.... until last night, that is. It was quite funny, actually. Kendall wanted a new pair of shoes, but her dad told her that she would have to work for them. They sat down and assigned a dollar amount for household chores (I never got paid $10 do the dishes, but whatever...). So on day one, Kendall is walking the dog and comes across the neighborhood dog walker. He tells her that he charges $5 to walk dogs and since she was making $10, she realized that she could contract out all of her chores and still make a profit. She paid the little Mexican man $5 for each chore.... washing the dishes, cleaning the windows, cleaning her room, washing the car. Then Bruce found out and gave her a nice little fatherly lecture about responsibility and made her pick up dog poo from the yard. The fact that she learned something from this experience was made evident when she said, "No pair of shoes is worth picking up dog poop! I learned an important lesson today... next time I want something, I'm going to ask my sisters!" Congratulations Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe... you've set amazing examples for your little sisters!

An Open Letter

Dear Mr. HastoUsePowerToolsOutsideMyWindowonSaturdayMornings,

I see that you are expecting a baby. Congratulations! I understand that this baby needs a place to sleep. I understand that for whatever reason, you are choosing to refinish an old crib. It really is starting to look great! What I do not understand is why you absolutely have to work on this old crib in the parking lot beside my bedroom window every Saturday morning. As a student, I do not have many opportunities to sleep in. I cherish my Saturday mornings. For the past few months I have been woken up at insane hours in the morning by the sound of power tools. As you can imagine, this is not a pleasant way to wake up! I would appreciate it if you could start working a few hours later next Saturday. Thanks so much!!

XOXO,
Kathleen
