I'd Like to Thank the Academy....

...for once again nominating movies that a majority of the country did not see. I saw the list this afternoon and had to laugh. I can honestly say that I've only seen one movie on the list this year (The Dark Knight). An improvement over last year when I actually did not see any of the movies until well after the Oscars (and even then, I only saw Juno).

Good try, Academy.
Better luck next year.

YOU CAN'T SIT WITH US!

On Sunday, my power went out (along with about 75% of the city). I wasn't even about to sit around and hope that it turned back on, so I packed up and spent the night at Annee's. Monday morning was a little colder than I expected (or packed for), so I asked to borrow a sweatshirt. Annee then said:

"And you can only wear a sweatshirt one day a week.
Soooooo, I guess you picked today."

My kindred soul.

The other day I was talking with some fellow law-schoolers when I quoted a line from one of my favorite movies. I can't even remember the line now, but I said nothing about it even being a movie quote and one of my new besties said, "Clueless. Don't try to bust out the movie quotes like I won't know them!" and I thought, "Marry me?" I didn't say actually that... because that's creepy. Nevertheless, the fact that he called out my Clueless quote earned him some points in my book.

What a Great Idea!

Ok, so apparently a Blockbuster store in Tucson decided to start a donation box where members could buy movies and donate them to the troops. At the end of 2 weeks, the boxes were overflowing with donations! So now, all Blockbusters are accepting movie donations for the troops! The only catch is that you have to purchase them at Blockbuster... but have no fear, because they have a selection of previously viewed movies starting at $3.99. They also have lots that are 2 for $20. So, next time you rent a movie, take a few extra dollars and donate a movie or two to the troops!

The above quote is exactly how I feel today. Those of you who have not seen "White Chicks" might not think it's funny... because really, as with most lines in that movie.. it's all about delivery. Go rent it! It's hilarious!

As for other movies, I rented "Mama's Boy" last night: Jeffrey is 29 and still lives at home with his mother. He works at a small bookstore but really wants to be an astronomer. His mother meets Mert, who becomes her boyfriend and takes time and attention away from Jeffrey. He will stop at nothing to break them up. I give it 4/5 stars! This line is hilarious:

Jeffrey: How long have I worked here?
Old Guy: 13 years.
Jeffrey: Have I ever missed a day of work?
Old Guy: Lots of times. There was the day your ant farm broke, the day you lost your hat, the day your tongue was sore...
Jeffrey: Well I can't do my job if I can't annunciate!

A Movie, Anyone?

A conversation to illustrate reason #2387489 that my summer job kinda sucks a little...

MAN: Yeah, I think we're just going to stick around for the 4th. Gas prices are kinda high and it might just be fun to hang around.. enjoy the pool, you know... just enjoy being home.
WOMAN: Oh yeah? We haven't decided what we're doing yet. Yeah, gas prices are definitely ridiculous.
MAN: I just feel bad for these people who make minimum wage. How can they afford to do anything?!

And honestly, that's the way they all treat me. I wanted to say, "Umm... I am a college graduate. I'm only working here for the summer because I'm going to law school in the fall. This isn't my job forever. Just so you know. And oh, I don't make minimum wage. Thanks."

One perk of my job is 5 free movies a week. That might actually be the only perk. This week I did alright with my picks. 4/5 were good choices. So... here are my thoughts:

Rendition: There is a terrorist attack in Egypt and Reese Witherspoon's husband is a suspect because he is an Egyptian chemical engineer who was on a flight from South Africa to Chicago. He had a connection in DC and was taken into custody by the CIA. Reese sets off on a mission to find out what happened to her husband. Amazing movie. The torture scenes were a little graphic, but kinda necessary to the storyline. 4/5 stars!

Lars and the Real Girl: Lars is lonely and a little socially awkward. He has a delusion where he thinks that this doll is a real person. He falls in love with her and so does his entire town. The movie was really good until the end... and then it became phenomenal! 4/5 stars from me!

Death at a Funeral: The dad dies and everything that can go wrong does go wrong at his funeral... they misplaced the body, there is accidental drug use and they find out more about their dad than they ever wanted to! Hilarious! We laughed from start to finish! It's the best little movie that nobody's ever heard of! Pick it up! 5/5 stars!

Charlie Wilson's War: Based on a true story. Charlie Wilson is a semi-morally bankrupt Congressman from Texas. He gets involved in a covert war to eradicate the Soviets from Afghanistan. Pretty decent movie. I got really sad about halfway through because I know what happened afterwards. 3/5 stars!

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead: I actually only watched 15 minutes of this movie. That's kinda my rule... if a movie doesn't have me interested in 15 minutes, I'm done. Actually, I almost turned it off after the opening scene. So now I'm watching Wedding Crashers on TBS for the fifteenth time! I love it!

Lame.

With nothing better to do, Erin and I rented a movie the other night. She picked "The Bucket List." We finally sat down to watch it last night and it was... lame. We wanted to turn it off, but neither of us could reach the remote. About 3/4 of the way through I was saved by a phone call. 

Lame movie. Don't watch it.
